"Bushwacked at Work: A Comparative Analysis of Mobbing & Bullying at Work,"
by Charles D. Bultena and Richard B. Whatcott

Abstract:

Over the past decade, the topic of workplace bullying has attracted considerable attention among management scholars and practitioners. More recently, the notion of mobbing has taken center stage in new organizational research. Unfortunately, the conceptual distinction between these forms of interpersonal conflict is not clear in the literature. Moreover, clear guidance for recognizing and reacting to either phenomenon in the workplace is lacking. This paper provides a comprehensive comparative analysis of the similarities and differences between mobbing and bullying behavior. Conceptual differences in the meaning and indicators of these behaviors, victims targeted, and consequences for victims and organizations are explored. A comprehensive framework for identification, prevention, intervention, and rehabilitation is presented for mobbing behavior. The paper closes with the introduction of an extensive flowchart that outlines specific steps for resolving mobbing behavior at work.
